Singing together with Christ
Why look at the Psalms?
Sometimes moving, passionate, beautiful or heartbreaking, the book of Psalms is one of the most treasured books in the Bible. Many of us have a favourite psalm that we read to encourage us when we’re struggling or to stir our hearts in faith.
But more than that, the Psalms are full of Christ!
In the Psalms we SEE Christ.
Christ himself said that the Psalms speak of him. He is our Prophet (teaching us), our Priest (bringing us to God) and our King (protecting and leading us.)
In the Psalms we HEAR Christ.
Christ often quoted the Psalms, which would have been a key part of his personal prayer and worship whilst on earth. What could be better than hearing Christ’s prayers?
In the Psalms we WORSHIP with Christ.
As we see how the Psalms apply first to Christ, then we will be better equipped to apply the psalms to ourselves, as we trust in Christ and receive all the benefits that he has won for us in his life, death and resurrection.
A true spirituality.
Many speak of, “spirituality.” But what does this mean? As we read the Psalms, we learn true spirituality is not just a “spiritual feeling,” or, “mindless meditation.” Rather it is our heart’s response to the biblical truths expressed in God’s Word. It’s foundation is the objective reality of Christ’s saving work for sinners, but it is expressed in the, “Words of Christ,” given to us in the Psalms.
